The new developments highlight the growing threat of the highly contagious subspecies of Omicron, which fueled the summer’s coronavirus wave.
Los Angeles is poised to become the first Southern California county to reinstate mandatory public indoor masks amid a resurgence of the coronavirus and an increase in cases and hospitalizations.
LA County is officially in. High society level Thursday. If it stays there for the next two weeks, the county will reissue the indoor mask order with an effective date of July 29.
No other California county has officially linked its classification to the CDC’s renewal of its community-level simulation orders. Along with LA, 41 other counties ranked high this week.
Many places recommend wearing a mask indoors while out in public, but don’t require it.
In addition to Los Angeles County, San Diego, Orange, Santa Barbara, Imperial and Tehama were the other counties that entered the highest community level of COVID-19 on Thursday for the first time since mid-March.
A total of 42 of California’s 58 counties, where 87% of Californians live, are in the high-risk community for COVID-19. As recently as a week ago, 41% of Californians lived in the 34 counties with the highest community levels of Covid-19.
Ventura County was the first Southern California county to enter the high level of Covid-19 community status it did on June 30.
With case rates high, counties are generally moving into high-risk Covid-19 community levels as hospitals exceed 10 new coronavirus-positive hospitalizations per 100,000 residents each week.
(There’s also another threshold for entry into the high-risk community level of COVID-19 — based on the percentage of hospital inpatient beds occupied by COVID-19 patients — but counties generally hit the other level first.)
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in February he said. He chose these measures as entry into the higher covid-19 community level because they provided better predictors of death, new hospital admissions, and use of intensive care units.

The number of coronavirus cases in Los Angeles County is increasing rapidly.
LA County is now averaging nearly 6,800 new coronavirus cases per day, a 35 percent increase per week. This is the biggest increase seen over the past week.
The final rate was higher than last summer’s Delta wave, rising to 3,500 cases a day. Last summer, Omicron’s wave opened 42,000 cases a day.
Per capita, L.A. County reported 469 coronavirus cases per week for every 100,000 residents as of Friday. A value of 100 or more is considered high. The number of corona virus victims has not been this high since the beginning of February.

Fans can take off their masks at home when actively eating or drinking.
“We are not closing anything. We are not asking people not to gather with their loved ones. “We’re not asking you to give up the activities you love,” said Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer. When you are at home with others, we ask you to wear a well-fitting, high-filtering mask with a highly contagious difference, and take prudent action. And I think that’s the prudent thing to do.
