NEW YORK – Los Angeles Lakers forward Jared Vanderbilt is expected to miss at least several weeks with a right leg injury, and could be out until further evaluation, sources told ESPN on Friday.

Vanderbilt will undergo a more extensive evaluation of the midfoot area in the coming days to determine the extent of the injury and whether a season-ending procedure is necessary, sources said.

Vanderbilt suffered the injury in the first half of LA’s 114-105 upset win over the Boston Celtics on Thursday. X-rays taken at the arena Thursday night were negative, according to the team, but Vanderbilt continues to seek a medical opinion.

After missing the first 20 games of the season with left heel bursitis, Vanderbilt has begun a late comeback, with flashing signs that he was a crucial impact player in L.A.’s run to the Western Conference finals last spring.

In the Lakers last eight games, Vanderbilt averaged 10.5 points on 66% shooting, 5.4 rebounds and 2.3 steals. Over the past six games, Vanderbilt has averaged 11.3 points — the most points per game of his six-year career, more than a six-game stretch averaged, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Lakers backup center Jackson Hayes called Vanderbilt the “heart and soul” of the team in an on-court interview with Spectrum Sportsnet after the Celtics’ win.

With guard Gabe Vincent already gone while recovering from a knee injury, Vanderbilt’s absence is a big blow to LA’s point-of-attack defense. Vanderbilt was ranked as the opposing team’s biggest offensive threat. His top-5 defensive halfcourt matchups since arriving in LA are Brandon Ingram, Anthony Edwards, DeMar DeRozan, Devin Booker and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on the second spectrum.

Vanderbilt, 24, signed a four-year, $48 million contract extension with the Lakers shortly before training camp opened in the fall.
