Resolve19 2 Scaled

At this year’s NAB, Blackmagic Design announced the latest version of its popular NLE DaVinci Resolve software. We’re now on version 19 – and it adds a lot of exciting features to streamline your post-production workflow, from a built-in movie look creator to AI-powered tools like the IntelliTrack AI tracker.

To learn more about this newest release, my colleague Graham Sheldon spoke with Stuart Ashton, Business Development Manager at Blackmagic Design, about all the additions to this very powerful software. Let’s take a quick look!

Blackmagic Design added a feature called “Film Look Creator” that makes some plugins look outdated. It reproduces film characteristics such as halation, blooming, grain, judder, gating and vignetting. We’ll be testing how it compares to some of the more popular ones in the near future.

Another interesting new tool is called Defocus Background. It allows the user to isolate the foreground using the blur tools and even allows you to set the amount of anamorphism to mimic the look of anamorphic lenses.

New AI features

One of the new features introduced in DaVinci Resolve 19 is IntelliTrack AI. This applies to two tracking options within the app. One is a point tracker for tracking and stabilization, which allows you to track multiple points in the frame, and the other allows for automatic volume panning. Artificial intelligence can track objects in the frame and adjust the sound accordingly, adding immersion to the scene.

New Fairlight Features

The audio unit, called Fairlight, has also received some useful updates. Dialogue Separator FX now allows more control when refining dialogue tracks. Until now, Noise Isolation only had one dial to turn it up or down, but now you have more options with dials to control the amount of background and ambient.

Music Remixer FX is a new effect for remixing sound, drums, bass, guitar and other sources, and allows you to remove vocals from the backing track if it interferes with your dialogue, for example.

The new duck track FX facilitates automatic transition, allowing you to automatically lower the volume of the background music as soon as the dialogue is spoken, and raise the music again after the dialogue ends. It was certainly possible before, but the new controls make it easier and better to control.

New features for live TV streaming

DaVinci Resolve 19 also adds many features to use for live TV broadcasts. It all happens in the Cut Page, which now supports a selection of live camera recordings for instant replay on air, complete with slow-motion features and the ability to insert stingers. Users can set markers or POIs called Points of Interest. This makes it easy to find them at every camera angle and play them on air with added effects or at a slower or faster speed.
