Helldivers 2 Patch Ground Breaker Armour Passive Fix 01

Sony has announced that the planned PlayStation Network account requirement for Helldivers 2 on all platforms – a decision that would have prevented a large number of players from being able to play the game from their home country – has been scrapped. The announcement came via the official Sony Twitter account, which broke the news a few minutes ago.

The statement reads: “Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback regarding the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which required new players and current players to link their Steam and PlayStation Network accounts starting May 30, will not be moving forward.”

We’re still learning what’s best for PC gamers, and your feedback is invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you posted on future plans.

Prior to this pushback, Helldivers 2’s decision to reactivate a mandatory PlayStation Network account to play the PC version led to an astronomical level of negative Steam reviews for the otherwise beloved 3rd person shooter last Friday. While Sony remained quiet over the weekend, the CEO of Arrowhead (developer of Helldivers 2) was quick and constant with public posts updating fans on the situation. It looks like both developers and players can be at peace with this withdrawal.

That’s not to say it hasn’t already hurt. Helldivers 2 has a negative review on Steam – the black spot will probably take some time to clear. Additionally, this controversy spilled over to other Arrowhead games, with Helldivers 1 seeing its share of review bombardment.

What about Sony? As a company that has expressed its desire to expand into the live streaming space, bought Bungie, and apparently wants to publish Helldivers 2, it’s been a confusing weekend for those interested in the sensibilities of the gaming megacorporation. Such a blunder certainly dulled the shine of the gold rush. This could cast doubt on the ability to leave projects in good stead, both for gamers and developers considering teaming up with Sony.

We have to sit back and see the long-term impact of this weekend’s failure. But for now, Helldivers 2 is back on the menu. No strings added!
