DETROIT — The Tigers have moved away from baseball’s alternate jerseys for years, sticking with their traditional home whites and street grays of the Olde English D, and their jump to the Baseball City Connection Series is both a rich history and an honor for Detroit. Hope for the future of the city.

The Tigers’ twist on the Motor City theme, unveiled Monday morning, is forward-looking with form, progressive in purpose, a break from the white and gray, but not a break from their heritage. From the mix of dark navy and electric blue colors to the shoulder patch, the jersey that simultaneously salutes Detroit’s famous streets and the infamous 313 area code — spent more than a year in design — makes a statement on the home of the Tigers while still honoring the traditions of American League charter franchises.

The Tigers will debut the new uniforms Friday for the opening weekend of a three-game series against the Astros at Comerica Park. They will wear them again on Saturday.

“The City Connection uniform represents Detroit’s unique blend of muscle and innovation and pays homage to the city that put the world on wheels,” said Ryan Gustafson, president/CEO of Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, in a release. “From the rubber tracks to the VIN tag to the M-1 patch on the sleeve, there are unique features on the uniform, cap and batting helmet that we feel Tiger fans and Detroiters alike will appreciate. Above all, the uniform is a symbol of a vibrant and exciting future for the Tigers and our great city.”

Just like the Astros’ Space City jersey released a few years ago, the Tigers’ City Connections front honors their hometown nickname. The dark navy jersey has electric blue — a brighter, more aggressive shade — under the white Motor City lettering on the front. A racing stripe adorns the bottom of both sleeves as well as the sides of the navy blue pants. The shoulder patch has a diamond-shaped M-1 road sign similar to Woodward Avenue, which passes just outside Comerica Park — the stadium’s address is 2100 Woodward Avenue — and runs north and west of downtown Detroit toward Pontiac. Place the plate in a different light, and 1 will be the middle digit in the 313 logo.

The navy blue cap and electric blue batting helmet both read DETROIT on the front, while the strings of numbers on the right side are intended to read like a license plate number, but refer to key seasons in Tigers history: 1901 (the Tigers’ first season in the American League), 35; 45, 68 and 84 (the club’s World Series title years). The VN is also printed on the inside of the jersey collar.

The traditional tiger logo is still visible, though not the usual orange color. A set of bright blue tiger eyes adorns the inside of the brim of the hat as well as the belt on the right side of the jersey.

The jersey debut Friday was the first regular-season game in which the Tigers wore blue jerseys for just one game since 1995. Cobb’s first two seasons in 1905-06 featured all-blue road jerseys.

The Tigers will celebrate the city’s first connection with a block party outside Comerica Park featuring live music, local food trucks, mural artists, a kids’ zone, a classic car show and merchandise booths. The block party is Friday from 4-7pm ET, and Saturday from noon to 6:30pm.
