2 De-Bloating Yoga Poses

1. Knees-to-chest (Apasanana)

This simple yet effective pose is often used at the end of a classical yoga class and is considered ‘Apasanana’. It aims to relieve back pain by massaging the abdomen. “As an expert, I would say this basic movement is effective in reducing stomach problems, as it is aptly known as the ‘windproof pose.’ You can settle your stomach.

To start, Dixon recommends “lying on your back with your arms at your sides.” Then, as you take a big breath and exhale, he says, “Bend your knees and slowly bring your feet up to your chest.” From this position, Dixon says, you can slowly rock from side to side, “bringing your chin toward your knees or bringing one leg at a time to your chest.” He instructs to keep this up to one minute.

2. Cat-cow

Most yoga classes start with cat and cow poses, and when these two are done together, Dixon says they’re just as good for your abs as your back, chest and neck. “As a professional, I argue that the cat-cow exercise relieves the pressure on the back, chest and neck by stretching and contracting the abdominal muscles with each action,” he explained.

To start, Dixon tells you to set up your yoga mat and then get down on your hands and knees with your knees “hip-width apart and your arms shoulder-width apart.” As you inhale, “bend your back and lift your head and tailbone toward the ceiling while looking up at the sky.” This action is known as the ‘cat’ pose. Then to shift into cow pose, as you inhale, Dixon says, “round the head and tail down to create a back arch.” If you experience frequent bloating or indigestion, he recommends trying this combination “eight to ten times daily or as needed” for relief.
