AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX competes with GeForce RTX 4080
PCWorld AMD has another great interview on the RDNA3 architecture.
After the RDNA3 event ended, one of the most common questions was why AMD didn’t compare the RX 7900 series with GeForce RTX 40 GPUs. Answered by AMD’s Frank Azor (Chief Architect, Gaming Solutions and Marketing). It confirmed that the RX 7900 series will compete with the RTX 4080 series, and since NVIDIA simply did not release this card, AMD had no information to include in the official charts.
[Radeon RX 7900 XTX] It’s meant to go against the 4080 and we don’t have benchmark numbers on the 4080. This is the main reason why you don’t see any NVIDIA comparisons. […] A $999 card is 60% more expensive than the 4090 competitor. it’s 4080 competitors.
– Frank Azor to PCWorld
PCWorld also wanted to know more about AMD’s next-generation expansion technology, FSR3. It was announced in the RDNA3 showcase. AMD has confirmed that this technology will arrive in 2023, but was not specific about timing or GPU support. So another burning question from the community was whether FSR3 would be supported by architectures other than RDNA3. Frank Azor confirmed that AMD wants FSR3 to be supported more than RDNA3:
[AMD FSR3] It’s not a reaction or a quick thing [to DLSS3], it’s something we’ve been working on for quite some time. Why is it taking a little longer to come out than you probably hoped it would? The main thing to remember about FSR is the FSR philosophy, and FSR has not only worked on RDNA2 or RDNA1 so far, but on other generations of AMD graphics cards. They also work on competitors’ graphics cards. This is more difficult than if we just worked on RDNA3. […] We really want to work on RDNA3.
– Frank Azor to PCWorld
Azor goes on to say that supporting an architecture is easy (pointing to DLSS3 on RTX 40). But AMD has promised with FSR technology to support many architectures and it takes time. The company can’t yet confirm 100% whether they can deliver on their promise to support more architectures with FSR 3, but they are “working”.
