The Blue Jays have placed Kevin Kiermaier on waivers, The Post has learned.
Toronto was looking at whether a team could lay claim to the veteran center fielder and shed the remaining $4.5 million on the one-year, $10.5 million contract he signed last offseason.
It’s highly doubtful that any team would take on that kind of financial responsibility for a struggling player like Kiermaier.
It’s an indication that the desperate Blue Jays are in sales mode, as well as falling under the $237 million initial luxury tax cap to see if they can make enough cuts between now and the July 30 trade deadline.
Toronto will spend about $10 million more than that figure.
Kiermaier, 34, remains a top-tier center fielder, but he’s also part of what the Blue Jays offense has become.
Through Tuesday, he was hitting .183 and had just a 48 OPS-plus — seventh-worst in the majors with at least 175 plate appearances.
