Happy Friday, Guardians! Welcome to one of our favorite segments on Bungie.net, this week’s Community Focus! This week we’re talking to a content creator with a pretty rad day job, Kujay!
Hi Kujay! Thanks for taking the time to chat with us! So let’s start with a little background. Who are you, what are your pronouns and where are you from?
Hi, my name is Kujay (o). I’m an aircraft designer by day Fate content creator by night! I grew up in a small town in eastern Kansas before moving to Southern California after college.
Wait, an aircraft designer? Well, we’ll have to touch on that in a moment. But what got you into gaming and content creation in the first place?
I started playing games at a very young age, when I was four years old. I had just started kindergarten and all the kids had a Super Nintendo to play with. It was the first game I played Yoshi’s Island (an amazing game so far!) And good lord, I was instantly hooked! Fast forward about 20 years, and after moving to SoCal, I found myself with more free time than I was used to during school (aerospace engineering courses are no joke!). Then, shortly after Rise of Iron launched, a streaming friend of mine started bugging me about trying out streaming for myself. After pushing it for a few months, I finally gave in and bought a PS4 webcam. I’ve found that streaming is so much fun (and something I’m really good at), so much so that I’ve been doing it for almost six years now!
That sounds like my kindergartner. 😊 Ok, so here’s the big question – how in the world do you balance both a full-time job and content creation?
Over the years, balancing my professional career with the content creation side of my life has been difficult. In the early years, I posted more, every Friday through Monday (usually involving a lot of Trials of Osiris support!) But, as the years went by and the responsibilities of my day job started to increase, I started to reduce the amount of content I pushed. I’ve started focusing more on YouTube in the last two years because it’s something I can do “piecemeal” as opposed to camera movement for live streaming. And on the Twitch side of the house, I’m mostly a “weekend warrior,” streaming only on Saturdays and Sundays. Juggling both sides of my life has been challenging, but also very rewarding. How many people design airplanes during the week and then have a successful broadcast and YouTube channel by the weekend? This is something I don’t take for granted!
Gosh, it sounds like such a wild ride, and it looks like you’ve done a pretty good job of maintaining it. So you mentioned Yoshi’s Island, but how did you find it? Fate?
So, the interesting thing is that I actually took a long break from the game Fate the call came. After going the hell out of Skyrim my senior year of high school, I didn’t play much at all my freshman or sophomore year of college. However, I was drawn back by the PS4 remaster of The Last of Us (AMAZING game btw!), which I never got a chance to play when it originally launched. And then, as if by “fate” (wink), a few days after finishing Our lastI received an email from Sony inviting me to play an upcoming game Fate alpha. I was always more Call of Duty kid grows up but most of my childhood friends were MASSIVE Hello fans. When asked about Bungie’s next project Fateall described the game as a mashup, encouraging me to give it a try Call of Duty, Helloand “Space Skyrim.” After a short while I decided to try the alpha and was immediately hooked. The gunplay was the best I’ve ever experienced. Now, more than eight years later, I am still helplessly addicted Fate Since I landed at the Cosmodrome for the first time.
One day a player, love to see it! What type of content do you like to focus on when making a stream or video?
I like to focus on endgame content Fate, whether it’s Trials of Osiris or Iron Banner, with a greater focus on the PvP side. I also love GM Nightfalls and raids and especially enjoy day one raid experiences with my group!
This is super awesome! Endgame content can be very difficult, so it’s really nice to have content creators like yourself to teach and care for others. For those new players, you’ll want to know before you start, or at least early in the game Fate travel?
Honestly, I wish someone had told me how deep I was about to sink. Fate universe and the wider Bungie community. How am I still playing the same game after eight years?! Hahaha, just kidding =). But in all seriousness, I’d like to know how important it is to find a solid group of people to play with Fate with I played solo for a decent amount of time during vanilla D1 before finding my way to the LFG (Looking For Group) websites. If the magic of the OG Vault of Glass hadn’t captured me, there was a good chance I would have stopped playing. Fate in those early days. The game is more fun to play when you have friends to move on to more challenging content. That’s why I’m so excited about the arrival of Guardian Ranks and the in-game Fireteam Finder. Fate next year 2. I think these will act as a catalyst for thousands of players to start creating their own friend groups and unlocking the true “endgame”. Fate.
heck yeah! Do you have any advice for players looking to improve their skills as a player as endgame content becomes the focus?
If you’re someone who wants to dive deeper into end-game experiences Fate and the best thing you can do to improve your skills is to connect with other players and start creating a group of friends that you can play with. Fate with while Fate playable alone, the game’s full potential is realized when you have a specific group of people you can rely on, both in casual PvE environments and in the depths of the Trials. Teamwork really does make the dream come true, and you’ll become a better player over time as you collaborate with other like-minded players.
Well, it’s time to ask, what is your main character and favorite subclass?
I’m probably going to rant here, but Hunter is my main character and I’ve been hopelessly addicted to Stompees for five years now. Going back to Modern Warfare 2, my favorite way to play FPS games has always been about speed, speed and more speed! To that end, I am absolutely in love with the Arc 3.0 Hunter. Speed Booster is just *chef’s kiss* and Gathering Storm might be the coolest Super in the game right now. I was the main Arcstrider from Seasons 2 to 8, so coming home to my old baby with Arc 3.0 was amazing!
Yes, going fast in video games is always fun! 😊 What kind of weather does your channel hold?
My channel tends to walk the line between entertaining and educational. In a moment, we’ll dive deep into the lore Your destiny start speculating about the universe and future stories. Later in the game, something completely ridiculous will happen in a Crucible match (at the expense of my opponent or myself, both often!). We’ll often talk about builds or the state of the game as a whole, all while keeping things fairly light with plenty of laughs along the way. Like the balance between my work life and content creation, my channel thrives on the duality of education and entertainment.
Is it fun and educational while also keeping it light? Looks like my place!
Well, it’s time to wrap up our interview, but I wanted to ask because you’ve been really inspiring in our conversation so far. What’s one thing you want to make sure every New Light knows when they join the Guardian ranks?
With the current New Light experience, it can feel overwhelming once you’ve finished your presentation at the Spaceport. You are summoned to Towe and you are presented with quest after quest. My advice would be to pick just ONE of these tasks and do it on your own. When you complete this first mission, you have a great chance to try out new weapons, increase your Power a bit, and generally feel the progression of the game. Fate. Once most people get this far, the game alone is enough to turn them off!
