CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the newly announced Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will be the first Xbox Series X game to be released on three discs.
Speaking to IGN, a spokesperson clarified how the Ultimate Edition, which packs the base Cyberpunk 2077 with the Phantom Liberty expansion, will be released on each system.
“The Xbox Series X box contains three discs with the base game and expansion,” a CD Projekt Red spokesperson confirmed, making it the only physical version of Phantom Liberty available on any platform.
“The PlayStation 5 box includes a game disc with Cyberpunk 2077 and an expansion code for purchase on the PlayStation Store,” they said. “The PC version comes with a GOG code for both the base game and the expansion. The reason for the difference in the inclusion of Phantom Liberty in the Ultimate Edition is due to technical requirements specific to each platform.”
While Baldur’s Gate 3 is poised to become the first triple-disc Xbox Series X game when it arrives in the first quarter of 2024, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will beat it to the punch when it launches on December 5, 2023. PS5 exclusive Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will also be available on two discs when it launches in February.
John Linneman, an employee of the “Digital Foundry” technology analysis site, wrote about it X/Twitter Saying why he believes the PS5 version of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition won’t come with Phantom Liberty on disc. Putting it there would require CD Projekt Red to resubmit their games to Sony instead of just adding a download code, which would cost extra time and money. The same goes for Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Integrade, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, etc. also happened with
The physical release for consoles will also mark the first time that Cyberpunk 2077 has been packaged under the current-gen banners, with only the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game previously available physically. The Ultimate Edition will not be released for these consoles, nor will the Phantom Liberty.
All of CD Projekt Red’s previous updates to the game will of course be included, making the Ultimate Edition a one-stop shop for the full Cyberpunk 2077 experience. Although initially criticized for its poor performance on consoles, the developer has since turned Cyberpunk 2077 around, and the game has sold 25 million copies by October 2023.
Phantom Liberty arrived on September 26, Update 2.0 broke ground a few days ago. It completely revamped Cyberpunk 2077 with features like a new perk system and improved artificial intelligence, and also shut down an Elon Musk fan theory, a reference to the late racing legend Ken Block, and weird additions to the game’s biggest mystery.
In our September 10th review of the expansion, IGN said: “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty completes the big turn for the future RPG that began with CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime spin-off and its latest 2.0 Update.”
