It’s been a few days since NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card went on sale for a ridiculous $1,199, and consumers aren’t buying it (literally). A few days after its launch, the card is not selling well in the consumer segment and there are many reasons for this.

‘No’ Responds to $1,199 US NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Graphics Card, Lower Stock Than 4090 and Still Available at Retailers

In our own vision, we found the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 to be an impressive card in terms of performance and power efficiency over the gen, but the price NVIDIA is asking is simply absurd. The 4080 retailed for $1,199, making it the biggest price increase we’ve seen on an ’80-class GeForce graphics card.

Just to put things into perspective. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 was released two years ago for $699. GeForce RTX 3080 12GB launched in the US for $899. Comparing these to the 4080’s $1999 price, we see a 71.5% and 50% price increase over gen. Previously, NVIDIA ’80’ class cards were well placed in the $550-$700 range for several years. If we take cryptocurrency out of the equation for a second (it helped to artificially inflate the prices of the cards), in reality, users who paid $ 700 or $ 800 for an RTX 3080 are not willing to pay more than $ 1 thousand for an “80” class. graphics card despite all the performance and all the nice features it has to offer. And that brings us to today.

Retailers in almost all regions are equipped with NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card. This is not a sight seen since the release of the RTX 4090, and it’s not necessarily due to the massive inventory that NVIDIA has for the RTX 4080. In fact, based on the numbers we have, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 shipments are recent. 30,000 units.

That’s 70% less than the RTX 4090’s current supply 100,000 a few weeks ago (we exclusively reported here) and now it is about 130,000 units. So, all of the RTX 40 series cards shipped around 160,000 units. That’s 30,000 RTX 4080 units and 130,000 RTX 4090 units. So, despite the lower supply, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 is still struggling to sell, and consumers are simply waiting for a cheaper solution under the $1000 US bracket, or they’ll buy the RTX 4090.

Here are a few examples of various stores in the US sitting around with RTX 4080 graphics cards that no one is interested in buying:

Below is the situation at most retailers Newegg all cards have been sold, it seems that eBay scalpers may have had a big hand in creating this shortage, as the site is loaded with cards for over $1,600 and some even over $2,000 (we don’t recommend buying any of these scalped cards):

This leads us to the third part of the story and that is the individual AIB model prices. Most NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 cards are priced neck-and-neck with the RTX 4090 Founders Edition or AIB models at reference prices. For example, ASUS’s RTX 4080 ROG STRIX and TUF Gaming are currently $1,500 and $1,549, respectively. We also recently covered an anime-themed model with a higher price tag than the RTX 4090. The RTX 4090 offers a 30-40% performance boost over the RTX 4080, so users are willing to pay 10-15 bucks for that extra performance and larger VRAM pool. % more price instead of buying an overpriced 4080.

The last and most important thing holding back consumers from buying an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card is AMD’s imminent launch. Red team’s Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards are marketing directly against the RTX 4080Firing on 16-pin connectors (now confirmed as user error), betting on its largely reference models and new feature set. The prices are very attractive at $899 and $999, but we still recommend our readers to wait for the final reviews. Regardless, that doesn’t change the fact that the GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card currently offers the worst performance for $.
