The revised technical regulations have been put in place by the FIA, paving the way for their unveiling in Montreal ahead of this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.

The 2026 regulations are now set to be approved by the World Motor Sport Council on June 28.

Explained: From more efficient cars to ‘X-mode’ and ‘Z-mode’ – lifting 2026 aerodynamic rules

FIA Single Seat Technical Director Nicolas Tombazis said: “With this regulation, the FIA has sought to develop new cars that are fully connected to the DNA of Formula 1 – cars that are light, extremely fast and efficient but also remain at the cutting edge of technology, and to achieve this we have developed a concept we call the ‘funny car’. – We made an idea.

“At the center of that vision is a redesigned power unit with a better distribution of power between the internal combustion element and the electric power source. On the chassis side, we were able to reduce the size and weight of the car by 30 kg, resulting in a more dynamic car. In addition, two exciting features to improve competition: We are introducing new features – active aerodynamics with very low drag on the straights and a manual override system that provides battery power on demand when drivers are close to the car in front of them.

“Lighter, more powerful and more focused on driver performance, the 2026 FIA Formula One technical regulations are designed to create closer ties between drivers, increase competition between teams and improve performance. We’ve also opted for a more electric powertrain, an overall more efficient car and fully sustainable fuels as part of our push to create a more sustainable future for our sport.
