Meta has fixed a Facebook bug that saw the social network automatically send friend requests when users log into any profile. In a statement shared by the company On Friday, Meta apologized for the mistake. “We’ve fixed a bug with a recent app update that caused some Facebook friend requests to be sent incorrectly,” a Meta spokesperson told the outlet. “We have stopped this from happening and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

As expected, the glitch caused equal amounts of amusement and confusion. Many were quick to point out that the technical controls temporarily made it impossible for other users to “follow Facebook”. Even more worryingly, some have found Facebook sending friend requests to people they tried to block. Note that the error news comes after Meta said it would cut 10,000 jobs. Mark Zuckerberg’s “Year of Efficiency” will see the company cut its workforce by at least 21,000 by the end of 2023.
