The Giants and Athletics completed a rare trade between Bay Area franchises on Friday.

San Francisco has traded veteran right-handed pitcher Ross Stripling and cash considerations to Oakland for infielder/outfielder Jonas Cox, both teams announced.

Stripling struggled in his first season with the Giants after signing a $25 million contract with San Francisco last season, posting an 0-5 record with a 5.35 ERA and 70 strikeouts to 16 walks in 89 innings while pitching between the rotation and starting bullpen.

After opting into the second and final year of his contract, Stripling is set to earn $12.5 million in 2024. Andrew Bagarly of the Athletics reported after the trade that San Francisco will pay Stripling $3.25 million in salary as part of the deal.

The 22-year-old Cox, a 2023 sixth-round draft pick from Oral Roberts, has played center field, left field and shortstop in the minor leagues, hitting .287/.366/.403 with two home runs, 15 RBI. and 20 stolen bases for A’s rookie ball and Single-A affiliates in 2023.

Stripling has been hard at work this offseason preparing for the 2024 season, and has introduced a new field he calls “Death Ball” that will be played in green and gold for the first time in his career.

The 34-year-old will join former Giants teammate and veteran left-hander Alex Wood in Oakland.
