FORT WORTH, Texas – Opting for an attractive package of speed, defense and college polish, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Oregon State infielder Travis Bazanan with the first overall pick in Sunday’s Major League Baseball draft.

Shortly after the start of the festival at the prestigious Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth’s Stockyards, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the selection of Bazana, a 21-year-old native of Australia who hit 28 home runs, stole 16 bases and posted a 1.479 OPS. Beavers in 2024.

The Rangers chose Bazzana over West Virginia’s JJ Wetherholt, who has a speedy infield along with several collegiate power bats. After spending this year playing cricket and other sports under the boyhood Down, he is expected to move quickly through the minor leagues, having slotted himself into the 1/1 slot.

But he’s locked in on baseball, and could soon join perennial star Jose Ramirez in Cleveland’s infield.

Bazzana was a .360 hitter in three seasons in Corvallis and earned Pac-12 Player of the Year honors. Adley Rutschman (Orioles, 2019) joined the only Oregon State players selected first overall.
