Once you have a cold, you want to get rid of it quickly. Especially since it’s so close to Christmas.

Getting plenty of rest and staying hydrated are two of the proven ways to get back to feeling 100 percent.

But, according to experts, there are other less unconventional ways to prevent that runny nose, sore throat, and whooping cough.

Take a hot shower

A warm bath or shower can relieve aches and pains, one of the worst side effects of bugs that have been keeping quiet this winter.

Dr Simon Clarke, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Reading, said staying warm could help reduce flu symptoms.

‘If you’re feeling cold and need to warm up, taking a bath or shower is one way,’ he says.

Not only is it warm, but the steam in the shower also thins mucus and clears your clogged sinuses. This allows it to flow easily.

Pharmacist Thorrun Govind suggests filling a bowl full of warm water and breathing in the steam to get similar benefits.

She said: ‘If you’re breathing deeply into a bowl, it can thin the mucus and help it flow a bit better.’

The hot water in the shower or bath increases blood flow, which relaxes and soothes your muscles – relieving aches and pains.

If you feel like running, you may not be willing to brave the cold outdoors.

But building up the courage to step outside for a brisk walk can really help, experts say.

Dr. Clark added that walking and getting fresh air is always good for your health. But gather heat this time of year, he insists.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a US medical research center, exercise can temporarily relieve a stuffy nose by opening up your nasal passages.

However, not everyone agrees with the logic that walking helps in pain.

“They want to rest and sleep and be warm,” said Mrs. Govind.

You should avoid contact with other people until you feel better.’

Eat a curry

Going to Curry can be the answer to your problem.

“Personally, I find it works,” says Dr. Clark.

‘I don’t know of any scientific basis for this, but eating spicy food can make you feel a little high.’

He explains that one reason for this may be because the spices irritate and open up your airways.

It unclogs your nose and allows you to breathe easier, but Dr. Clark admits that experts themselves aren’t 100 percent sure why it works.

It has been proven that eating madras helps in the experiments conducted by cold researchers.

According to the Common Cold Center at Cardiff University, the spiced food helps to stimulate saliva, which reduces the symptoms of cough and sore throat.

Creams are full of anti-viral vitamins.

Ingredients like garlic and ginger are rich in zinc to give added nutrients an extra kick, which can help ward off the rhinovirus that causes many colds. Don’t expect experts to jump in right away, but they can help.

A cuppa can really make you feel better.

Professor Ron Eccles, from Cardiff University’s Common Cold Center, and his team studied the effects of stuffing the nose with a once comforting hot drink.

But drinking it at room temperature only relieves the symptoms of a runny nose, cough and sneeze.

According to Professor Ecclesiastes, ‘any hot, sweet drink will relieve most of the symptoms of the common cold, especially sore throat and cough.’

He conducted a theory-testing clinical trial of fresh blackcurrant cordial to help relieve sore throats.

But it doesn’t need to be fresh blackcurrant: ‘Any fresh-tasting liquid will stimulate saliva and mucus secretion and soothe a sore throat,’ he says.

As for how a hot shower and moisture in the air helps, the theory is that the steam in a hot drink can soften and break up mucus, making it easier to breathe.

“You need to drink plenty of fluids because it lubricates your mucus membranes,” says Ms Govind.

‘We encourage people to drink warm liquids because it makes you feel a little more comfortable.’
