The 49ers have had a lot of injury issues at quarterback over the past few years, whether it was with or not Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lanceor very soon Brooke Purdy.
Garoppolo’s injury history is one of the reasons the club went out and traded for Lance.
At Wednesday’s postseason press conference, general manager John Lynch was asked if the 49ers could do anything to address their injury woes or if there was anything beyond the club’s control. When he did, he said something interesting about the team’s No. 3 overall pick in 2021.
“I think it’s a tough place to play in this league,” Lynch said. [Shanahan] Having said that, I think Brooke has been incredibly durable throughout his career. He gets into a foul situation where he tries to throw the ball downfield and the NFL is pulling the edge the other way. It doesn’t stay still, so it stinks.
“Tre has had his problems and Tre has been here the last couple of years and it’s been tough. Obviously he has to make sure he stays healthy, but I know there were periods of my career where I struggled to stay healthy, then I went eight years without losing anything. So it happens sometimes. And yeah, I’m sure people are wondering, Jimmy had his issues, but trust me, it’s not the way we play our quarterback or anything.
“I think it’s just a coincidence and we’ll look at everything, but I don’t think we have any more issues than anybody else. I think it’s a tough position in this league.
Lance started just four games in two seasons and should not have started as a starter. But he suffered a knee injury in 2021 before breaking his ankle in the second week of this season.
At this point, the 49ers are scouting going into 2023 with Lance and Purdy as their top options at quarterback — though Lance will likely have a leg up heading into training camp as he’ll be ready to take reps in the offseason. Either way, the 49ers could definitely use some better offensive opportunities
