The start of training camp for most NFL teams is just over a week away. After a short hiatus, football will return to the sports fan’s consciousness… if it ever does. And with it comes preparation for the latest Madden video game. But this year’s game, which will be released on August 19, is a little different.

Following the passing of the franchise’s namesake on Dec. 28, 2021, Hall of Fame coach John Madden and EA Sports’ decision to put Madden on the cover, there’s a sense of legacy surrounding the game this year. But Madden always wanted the game to be on football and to coach, teach and talk about the sport he loves as closely as possible. He was the one that pushed him to 11-for-11 in the innings. He was involved in video game aspects until his death.

As the game has grown in the American cultural zeitgeist, some aspects have stood out more than others. Rating is important to players. They complain about their ratings on social media and sometimes question what they do. The Madden staff has an entire staff dedicated to adjusting ratings throughout the year. It’s a big deal.

And with that in mind, the Madden 23 initial ratings at launchSome of the best players at every level and the annual 99 club that has turned into an honor around the sport. This week we will feature more positions every day:

Laid off last year: Julius Jones (Number 5) Allen Robinson II (Number 10)

He probably didn’t find a group of players as encouraging as a receiver in real life this past season. one time Christian Kirk He received a four-year, $72 million contract from Jacksonville, seemingly sparking an explosion of money going to premium players at the position. And he has, in many ways, turned receiver into a key NFL position alongside quarterback, left tackle, edge rusher and cornerback. Receivers are making mega money — and in Madden, their ratings show just how talented this team is.

It’s one of three teams in the top 10 with a rating of 90 or higher and as many as five receivers who can be believed to be the best in the game.

Adams was the top receiver in the game when he moved from the Packers to the Raiders, and his status in the ’99 club remains the same. It represents a big jump from Adams, who was 94 overall when he started Mad 21 last year.

There is significant movement behind Adams. Hopkins dropped from 98 to 96, and from second to fourth. Replacing him at No. 2 overall is Kupp, who went from outside the top 10 early last year to 98 overall after a 145-catch, 1,947-yard, 16-touchdown season. The appearance of the coup knocked many players at least one place.

Aborted. Austin Hooper (No. 6), Rob Gronkowski (Number 7)

For a position that continues to grow in scope and importance on the field, the man on it remains the same. While Kelce doesn’t belong in the 99 club — though don’t be surprised if he does in the 2022 season — he remains the No. 1 tight end in the game at 98. And other than one other player, the list behind him is not very close.

Kelsey’s biggest competition is Kittle, one of his Tate End University teammates. Kittle is the No. 2 tight end again this season and is now ranked 97 overall, up from 96 last year. Then comes the drop. Andrews (93 overall) enters the 90s and moves from No. 4 to No. 3. It flips with Waller, going from No. 3 to No. 4 and from 93 last year to 91 this year.

After that, big moves happen. Hockenson — one of the game’s top young tight ends — is now No. 5 in the game and No. 89 overall, and No. 85 after last season. Pitts had his best rookie season in 2021, including 68 catches and 1,026 yards, and is now No. 6 at 87. Gesicki dropped slightly from 8th to No. 7 and from A. 85 to 86. Goedert made the same move from No. 10 to No. 8 and from 84 to 85. Ertz, one of the top tight ends in the league, made a big jump from 80 overall to 84 and entered. Top 10 at number 9.
