Late last week, Square Enix announced that it was under siege 2020 live service game, Marvel’s Avengerswill no longer receive new content or major updates after March 31st. And All official support for the game will end On September 30, 2023, digital sales also end on that date. While you can still play it offline and online with friends after these dates, it’s effectively over for the troubled online action game. However, even in death, developer Crystal Dynamics has just confirmed that the Spider-Man character will remain exclusive to the PS4 and PS5 versions.
This saga began when freedom was just around the corner Marvel’s AvengersCrystal Dynamics announced Spider-Man will be added to the game later. However, the popular web-slinger would not be coming to the Xbox or PC versions. Instead, only PS4 (and later PS5) players would have access to the character. Took longer than expectedbut finally in November 2021 Spider-Man appeared in the PlayStation versions. At the time, fans thought it was because Spider-Man was owned by Sony and therefore Spidey was only on the PlayStation. (It’s not, because Sony just owns the movie rights to the character.) But since then, the popular superhero has appeared in a movie. Midnight suns on all platforms. So Spider-Man can’t just exist on PlayStation consoles.
And yet, Crystal Dynamics confirmed in a January 20 blog post Spider-Man still won’t be Coming to Xbox or PC. What a shame! Even if the failed live-action game dies, none of Spidey’s corporate bosses would allow him to run free for multiple people on all platforms. Avengers The players out there are still enjoying the game.
my city Marvel, PlayStation, Square Enix, Embracer Group and Crystal Dynamics were contacted for comment, but did not respond prior to publication.
I already know that in comments or quote retweets, people will claim that Sony completely owns Spider-Man (it doesn’t) or that Sony can’t legally allow the character to appear on other platforms (it can). It’s still inside Midnight suns, a game released on Xbox, PlayStation and PC. It is in mobile games which are also released on iOS, Android and PC.
So if the people pulling the strings, cutting the deals, and sealing the contracts can agree to it, it’s entirely possible that Spidey will appear on other consoles. But no one seems to care enough Avengers and its community to put together one last goodwill gesture for gamers and allow the webslinger’s hero to appear on Xbox and PC. If you want to play the full version of the game after support ends in September, you’ll apparently need to own a PlayStation. Say it with me again: Console-exclusive DLC is bad.
