Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg today compared the Apple Vision Pro to the $500 Meta Quest 3. In an Instagram videoand gave several reasons why he thinks Meta headphones are better than Apple’s.

According to Zuckerberg, Quest 3 is better “for the vast majority of things that people use mixed reality for,” and here are some of the things he had to say about Meta Quest 3:

  • 7 times cheaper than Vision Pro.
  • It transitions in high quality “just like Vision Pro” with large screens.
  • Quest is more comfortable – 120 grams less.
  • No wires to get in your way when you’re moving.
  • The field of view is wider and the screen is brighter.
  • Vision Pro has motion blur when you move. Quest is very sharp.
  • Accurate controllers like hand tracking are available, and the Quest’s hand tracking is even more accurate.
  • Quest’s library of immersive content is even deeper.
  • You can watch YouTube or play Xbox.

Zuckerberg said he was surprised at the “trade-offs” Apple had to make to provide a higher-resolution screen than the Quest 3 offered, sacrificing “comfort,” “ergonomics” and more. He then went on to explain that Apple isn’t always a leader in new product categories, and that he hopes the Meta devices will ultimately “win out.”

Now look, I know some fanboys get upset when someone dares to ask if Apple is going to be the leader in a new category, but the reality is that every generation of computer has an open and closed model. Yes, Apple’s closed model has won in mobile. It’s not always like that. If you go back to the PC era, Microsoft’s open model was the winner. In this next generation, the Meta will be an open model, and I really want to make sure that the open model wins again. The future is not yet written.

Meta Quest 3 was launched back in October. It has two 2K LCD panels compared to the ‌Apple Vision Pro‌’s 4K microLED displays. It weighs 515 grams, while the Vision Pro weighs between 600 and 650 grams, and it doesn’t have a separate battery pack. It uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, has 8GB of RAM and is equipped with Touch Plus controllers.

Meta has produced several headsets so far, including the Oculus Quest, Oculus Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro. Apple plans to continue making the headphones, and rumors suggest that the next-generation version will be more affordable. When Apple CEO Tim Cook explained the Vision Pro’s pricing, he said it was “tomorrow’s technology today.”
