Cary, NC – Reports of a mysterious respiratory disease affecting dogs have caused a wave of panic across North Carolina. Truss Vet Veterinary Urgent Care has seen an alarming rise in canine respiratory infections in recent days, with eight dogs treated for respiratory symptoms in the past 24 hours, surpassing the total number of cases treated last week.

The cause of this enigmatic disease is a mystery, as the symptoms are similar to those of other viral infections such as influenza. Further complicating matters is the lack of diagnostic tests designed specifically for this disease.

At Truss Vet, veterinarians carefully monitor the condition, especially for signs of pneumonia, a serious problem caused by a respiratory infection.

Dr. Brad Wafa of Truss Vet urges pet owners to be alert for symptoms such as coughing, loss of appetite, loss of energy and fever. “Given what we’re seeing in the West, we’re forced to treat these cases with greater scrutiny,” said Dr. Brad Wafa, a Trust veterinarian. Out of an abundance of caution, we are now being more cautious.

Triangle Veterinary Referral Hospital (TVRH) advises pet owners to be alert for any unusual behavior or symptoms in their dog such as coughing, runny eyes or nose, sneezing, loss of appetite, labored breathing and lethargy.

They also advise pet owners to minimize public travel with their dogs during this time. This is due to the fact that the disease is not recognized, and dogs in public places are more likely to catch the virus.
