HAMPTON, Ga. – Joey Logano will start from the back and have to go through pit lane early in Sunday’s race due to a glove violation, NASCAR announced Sunday.

Logano qualified second. NASCAR cited Logano for violating Rule 14.3.1.1 of the Cup rulebook. NASCAR has stated that Logano’s gloves do not meet SFI safety guidelines. Any further punishment could come this week.

The penalty was due to a change in the glove shown on the in-car camera during Saturday’s qualifying race.

The SFI Foundation is a non-profit organization established to develop and administer quality assurance standards for special performance and racing equipment. NASCAR, along with other racing series, use SFI standards for safety equipment.

At Atlanta’s extended pit road — the pit road entrance is at Turn 3 — Logano could lose nearly two laps as the field raced under green flag conditions.

NASCAR also announced that Chase Elliott will be retiring before Sunday’s race for unauthorized adjustments to his car.
