“The Golden Swan” and “Dance for Parkinson’s” have been hits over the years.

While the Oklahoma City Ballet is known for its amazing performances by artists from around the world, it also provides an outlet for seniors looking to put a little pep in their step or stay healthy.

In the year In 2016, the ballet launched the “Golden Swans” program, which offers free ballet lessons to seniors in the city. A year later, he offered “Dance for Parkinson’s,” which provides education for people with Parkinson’s disease, said Joe Lynn Jones, executive director of the ballet.

Jones told “GMA3” that the health benefits of dance classes are great, and the instructors tailor the classes to meet the needs of their students and make the practice enjoyable. For example, “Dance for Parkinson’s” classes involve the students sitting on a chair and doing their moves together.

“So, first of all, they get comfortable because it helps them with their social functions,” she says. “They’re here with friends and acquaintances and they’re exercising.”

Those who participated in the program said they enjoyed their newfound dance community.

Nancy Brawler was enrolled in the “Golden Swans” program in 2017 after turning 80.

“But personally, it has helped me with strength and balance and focus,” she says.

Another participant, Robin Martin, told “GMA3” that she used to dance when she was young, but had to put it on hold after she injured her knee. She said the program gave her a second chance to return to her love of art.

“I think the best thing about the class is it doesn’t matter if you’ve danced before or you’ve never danced at all. The class is designed to cater to everyone,” Martin said.

Those who participated in the “Dance for Parkinson’s” program said they felt a big difference in their health when they danced “GMA3”.

Randy Keller said he feels better every time he leaves the classroom.

“I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s back in 2019, and what I’ve learned is that the way, the best way, to manage Parkinson’s is to participate in a lot of activities,” he said.

Jones said the ballet company offers two programs around the city and welcomes others interested in joining.

“Our mission and core values ​​are communities; they are at the heart of everything we do,” she said.
