Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid suffered a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee after Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga fell on his leg during Tuesday night’s game, the Sixers announced Thursday.

Embiid will be sidelined for the remainder of the weekend as treatment options continue to be explored for the injury. Sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that there is still uncertainty about how Embiid and the 76ers will move forward with a medical plan for the injury, and that options will be discussed over the next several days.

After missing three games last month with a sore left knee, Embiid sat out Saturday’s games in Denver and Monday’s games against the Portland Trail Blazers with the same issue. He then played against Golden State on Tuesday night but appeared to kneel in the game.

The injury occurred when Kuminga accidentally fell on Embiid while going after the ball in the fourth quarter. Embiid eventually left the court under his own power. He and the Sixers have spent the past two days evaluating the injury and exploring possible treatment options.

Embiid, the reigning NBA Most Valuable Player, leads the NBA in scoring, averaging 35.3 points, 11.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game. He scored 70 points against the San Antonio Spurs last week and is currently on pace for more points than in minutes played this season — only Wilt Chamberlain has done in a single season.

He has already been ruled out of Thursday night’s game at Utah, which will be the 13th game Embiid has missed. As part of the league’s new player participation policy that went into effect this season, a player cannot miss more than 17 games to be eligible for the league’s top honors, including MVP and All-NBA honors.

Embiid was named an All-Star last week and will likely be replaced by NBA commissioner Adam Silver before the game in Indianapolis later this month.
