It’s been a while since Bethesda had something significant to say about Starfield, but that should change soon — not only is its Shattered Space story expansion confirmed for a fall release, but a new free update should launch soon.

Shattered Space first made headlines last June, when several Starfield special editions were bundled together for release sometime this year. And Bethesda’s Todd Howard speaks Some Funny Games (Thanks VGC) narrowed it down now, confirming that the expansion will arrive “in the fall,” promising new story content, new locations, new gear, and more.

But there’s more Starfield stuff going on, with Howard also revealing that the new free update will be “announced within a few days this week” ahead of the regular Steam beta – which puts its arrival about a month and a half after the March update, meaning Bethesda is still following last year’s manages to stick to its promise of releasing new Starfield updates “about every six weeks”.

As for what this latest release will bring, Howard “teased a lot,” explaining that the team is “reworking the map stuff, so we have some city map stuff.” Hopefully this will address Starfield’s much-criticised, bafflingly useless city maps, which are currently presented as a few icons on some jagged topography – with no useful street layout or visible buildings.

Players can also expect some “big stuff for shipbuilding,” though it’s not entirely clear what that might be. Howard didn’t offer any updates on Bethesda’s promise of “new ways to travel,” but hopefully we’ll hear more about it later this year.
