As in the previous case Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Allows Link to use his shield as a makeshift surfing device. If you know how to do it, it’s both fun and useful for getting out of trouble. But TotK adds a little twist to this fun mechanic with the game’s new Fuse ability. If you thought surfing on shields was fun before, wait.
Tears of the kingdom is quickly gaining notoriety for how playful and intuitive its various physics and crafting systems are. Fuse and Ultrahand are great ways to bring different objects together, but with the game’s vibrant physics, players discover all sorts of interesting ways. being around puzzles, fight, engaging in questionable activitiesand just have fun. One such possibility is being able to combine random objects with Link’s shield to increase its defensive properties or enhance the game’s shield surfing technique depending on what items you attach it to.
Shield Surfing 101: How to Master the Technique
If you’ve tried to jump with your shield up, you may have accidentally triggered the shield surfing technique. To save surfing, you may want to perform this key combination in this order: X + ZL + A. (You can also change the order of X and ZL for this combo). Note that only shields with smooth surfaces will work. So something like an Armor-Shard Shield with its spikes will just knock you down.
It is better to do this first in a stationary position. Once you feel that, running will give you some momentum. The steeper the slope you go down, the further you will go. Note: this damages the shield. So keep the cheap ones for stun, or use the technique as a quick evasive maneuver to reduce your shield damage.
Also, when you’re paragliding while shield surfing, your shield will stay attached to your leg, so feel free to go back to paragliding with chain surfing. Also, hitting a liftsurf combo while paragliding will take you into a liftsurf, so the next time you’re paragliding to the surface, you can now land in style.
Combine your shields with Zonai Carts and Skis for even more fun
Zonai devices can be found all over Hyrule. Two in particular can be attached to your shield to increase your surfing capabilities: buggies and skis. You can find carts from the Zonai Dispensary on top of the Upland Zorana Skyview Tower. highlighted in this manual). Skis can be found at the East Gerudo Sky Archipelago Zonai Dispenser. Note that these aren’t the only places to find such items, but this is where we’ve had the best luck getting them. You can hover over dispensers on the map to see what items are available.

Once you have these items, drop them in front of you, then press L to summon your skills. Highlight the item you want to attach and then press ZL to attach it to the shield. Attaching a cart to your shield will give you a skateboard to ride around. It offers more travel distance and control than a single shield. You can also ollie with a cart shield.
Melting a ski basically gives a snowboard (but you can use it on grass and other surfaces). You can surf with galloping horses – almost as much fun as swimming with tigers (don’t ask).
This does not make your shield invincible. Surfing will still subject your shield to wear and tear, and even if it sticks to something, it will break. So use it where it makes sense. This is a pretty fantastic way to get some distance from Gloom Hands.
Shield surfing is just one of many playful tricks Tears of the kingdom offers, allowing for both fun and strategy. And the guard only adds to the hilarity you can get up to. Simply some suitable music queue and look at those steep drops!
