Finally, Game Freak did it. According to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, there are currently over 1,000 Pokémon.

Pokémon Sword and Shield, along with its own DLC, brought the total to 905, and the additions of Scarlet and Violet brought their total to 1,008. For those keeping track, this doesn’t count regional variants, such as the new variant of Wooper in the Paldea region. accounts for new regional evolutions, assuming they have different names from their counterparts elsewhere.

So who is Pokémon number 1000? Apparently it was Game Freak many They knew they were making a monster worthy of the honor of being number 1000, so they leaned into it a bit.

Warning: We will be spoiling Pokemon number 1000 for you below this video. If you don’t want to know, don’t go any further.

Who is that 1000th Pokemon? It’s…Gholdengo!

Okay, yes, it looks like a cereal mascot. But listen to us. Gholdengo is an adorable little friend and a fun choice for Pokémon 1000. It evolves from Gimmighoul, a ghost Pokemon that can be found stalking treasure chests and pulling mime-type pranks on unsuspecting trainers throughout Paldea. When defeated or captured, Gimmighoul drops Gimmighoul Coins, which can also be found while traveling around the region. You need 1000 of these Gimmighoul Coins before Gimmighoul can transform into Gholdengo in the next level. This is a clear nod to Gholdengo’s status as the 1000th Pokemon.

Gholdengo’s Pokedex entry is also proof that this adorable little guy is loved by Game Freak. In Scarlet, at least, it reads:

Its trunk appears to contain 1000 coins. This Pokemon gets along well with others and makes friends with everyone quickly.

Plus, the cover of his Pokedex entry is incredible: it shows him surfing on a skateboard made of coins.

We’re big fans of Gholdengo here. Congratulations, Gholdengo, on becoming the 1000th Pokémon. Can’t wait to see what Game Freak does for issue 2000! [Editor’s Note: Pokemon 2000… I liked that movie – Kat Bailey].
