The best argument for Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy is that he’s managed consecutive 12-win seasons. That argument probably also applies to various members of the coaching staff who now find themselves out of a job.
In addition to senior defensive assistant George Edwards and running backs coach Leap Pitt, The Cowboys fell apart. Along with offensive line coach Joe Philbin, assistant defensive line coach Leon Lett and assistant head coach Rob Davis, Clarence E. Hill, Jr. Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
As PFT announced earlier in the week, the contracts have expired for all but four members of the coaching staff. But it is still firing as a practical matter of not giving a new contract.
And it makes me wonder if something else is going on behind the scenes. Something like how owner Jerry Jones strategically lined up a replacement before firing the head coach because Jones would only fire the head coach if Jones found a replacement he wanted.
In unrelated (or not) developments, Sean Payton’s candidacy appears to be in the thick of things with four teams expressing interest in his services.
