The Athletic obtained a scouting report that explored Purdine’s positive attributes and some of his downsides.

But one coach also pointed out his physical limitations. “He’s an under-tested, limited-fit athlete,” the report said, whose weaknesses include “limited arm strength and throwing.”

The 49ers previously drafted Trey Lance with the No. 3 pick in the 2021 draft. San Francisco appeared ready to turn the franchise keys over to the Lancers for the 2022 season, and Purdy wasn’t expected to contribute this year.
Several months after drafting Purdy, the Niners decided to restructure veteran Jimmy Garoppolo’s contract, agreeing to a limited one-year deal to serve as Lance’s backup. But Lance suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2, and Garoppolo later went down with a foot injury, suddenly pushing Purdy into the starting role.
Purdy has yet to lose a game since being named the starter. The next challenge will be against the top seed for the NFC Championship on Sunday Philadelphia Eagles. Purdy will become the fifth starting quarterback to start a conference championship game.

Coaches who evaluated Purdy said the 23-year-old’s defensive ability contributed to his success.
“They make a lot of moves, shifts, kills and alerts in that offense, so they’re putting in a lot of information upfront. It can be hard to just pick up the ball and figure out a way to get the ball. His composure is late. Bottom line — he doesn’t make too many boneheaded mistakes — really impressive. It was,” said the coach, who believes Purdy would be considered a second- or third-round pick today.

Purdy has thrown for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions, completing 67.1 percent of his NFL career.
