Artificial sweeteners may not be suitable for sugar and may have harmful effects on human health.

according to NBC NewsA study conducted by Mathilde Tuvir, director of research at France’s National Institute of Health and Medical Research, may have confirmed a link between artificial sweeteners and heart disease.

Before that, artificial sweeteners can cause gut bacteria to enter cells in the gut wall, increasing susceptibility to disease or disability. Artificial sweeteners are linked to increased risk of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and heart disease, as well as cancer.

“The more evidence that shows these negative health effects, the less we want to encourage people to switch from added sugars to nutritious sweeteners,” said Dr. Cathy Page, associate professor of medicine at the university. Southern California, according to NBC.

Touvier said her study, which included more than 100,000 adults in France and was published Wednesday in the BMJ, is the first to directly examine how a person’s overall dietary intake of artificial sweeteners affects their risk of heart disease. Previous research has mostly focused on the relationship between artificially sweetened beverages and disease.

Her study’s findings suggest that consumption of aspartame in foods including cereal, candy and diet drinks, as well as the table sweeteners Equal and NutraSweet, increases the risk of stroke in individuals.

Similar to sucralose — which Page says is the world’s most widely used artificial sweetener — acesulfame potassium is frequently used in “sugar-free” soda. According to Tuvier’s study, people who consume large amounts of grapes have a higher risk of heart disease. Sucralose is found in Splenda as well as in baked goods, ice cream, canned fruit and syrups.

Tuvier’s team established the daily average for a large amount of sweetener at around 77 milligrams, or two packets of table sweets. Soft drinks accounted for more than half of participants’ artificial sweetener use, while table sweeteners accounted for 30%. Another 8% came from dairy products with added sugar, such as fruit-filled cottage cheese or yogurt.

Naturally sweet fruit is an ideal substitute for foods high in sugar, according to Page. Opting for table sugar or even seemingly natural sweeteners like agave is not the healthiest option.

“We really need to get people to eat more sugar and try to reduce sugar consumption,” NBC reported. “And the way to do that is not to use a lot of non-nutritive sweeteners.”
