Victoria Beckham has been called the “mother of all profits” after the collapse of the Matches fashion group.

The former Spice Girl and bosses at her VB label demanded the online retailer return all summer stock it had shipped in March, only to learn days later that the company had failed.

A VB source says he is working with Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group, which bought Matches last December, as he returns the clothes because he fears the firm, which is now in administration, won’t pay him.

There are currently 68 VB lines for sale on the site. A source said: “Matches continues to sell designer clothing online and has promised to pay for it all. But some brands, such as VB, have insisted on buying back stock so they can sell it themselves. Not everyone is convinced that Mike Ashley’s clothing – and executives – will pay.

Different brands have their own arrangements with Matches. In VB’s case, Victoria ordered her entire collection sent back – which was agreed in principle. Smaller labels have had to write off their stock and are now in danger of losing their business.

Cefinn, the luxury womenswear brand owned by Samantha Cameron, was worried it would not return a large summer order placed by the retailer. The foreign minister’s wife feared financial turmoil after making a large quantity of Cefinn clothes for the Matches and sending the order without paying in advance. When the administrators came in, they told her that her clothes were no longer needed, and she had to foot the bill – until VB paved the way for the mammoth comeback.

A source said: “After VB demanded all their stock back, Cefinn followed suit and insisted on a full refund. Matches has agreed to do this in principle for both labels. Shipments have started but it’s a slow process. This is the mother of all refunds .

There were fears among staff that the closure of Matches would push Ceffin to the brink of collapse, although the MoS understands the business will now survive.

Cefinn, VB, Matches and Frasers Group declined to comment.
