WayForward director says Nintendo has changed the way it looks at making video games

Yesterday, during its recent Indie World launch, WayForward unveiled Yars Rising – a new Metroidvania based on the classic Atari franchise.

Veteran game designer James Montagna is leading this new project, and after teaming up with Nintendo for last year’s release Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, he apparently has a fresh take on game design.

Here’s what Nintendo game makers have to say about it (Through the game file):

“It’s like seeing a color that doesn’t exist. As this color has no name. I couldn’t have imagined it before. But once you touch it and see it, it’s like you can’t see it any other way.”

Many developers have mentioned how they grew up as fans of Nintendo games and idolized famous figures like Shigeru Miyamoto, so it’s always nice to hear stories like this. Last year, the Metroid Dread team described working with MercurySteam Nintendo as a “game-changing experience.”

Yars is scheduled to arrive on the Switch eShop later this year, and Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is available for purchase now.
