Fresno, CaliforniaKSEE/KGPE) – Anyone who was at Fresno’s Yosemite International Airport on the evening of May 19 with the highly contagious virus is being asked to get tested after boarding an inbound flight at the time.

According to the Fresno County Department of Public Health, the unidentified person arrived at Fresno Yosemite International Airport on United Flight 5591 from Los Angeles to Fresno. That man was later diagnosed with measles.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said the person arrived on Lufthansa flight LH7852. Online flight tracking service FlightAwarethe airline flies from Munich, Germany to Los Angeles.

The Fresno County Department of Public Health warns that individuals who were at Fresno Yosemite International between 8:12 a.m. and 9:12 p.m. on May 19 may contract measles from exposure to this traveler. No other exposures to the virus have occurred in Fresno County, officials added.

Fresno County officials say passengers assigned to reserved seats on United Flight 5591 may be at risk, but while the investigation is underway, the Department of Public Health is concerned about anyone at Fresno Airport between 8:12 a.m. and 9:12 p.m. pm to take the following steps

  • If you are immunocompromised, pregnant or have a baby under 12 months of age, contact your primary care provider and the Fresno County Department of Public Health at 559-600-3332.

  • Stay home if you have measles symptoms such as fever, rash, cough, runny nose, and red/watery eyes.

  • If you experience symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately. Do not enter a health care facility before calling the health care facility and informing them of your measles exposure and symptoms.

Health officials have warned that anyone who is exposed should check whether they have had or have had measles in the past. If not, they are considered at risk of infection if exposed.

People at risk will catch measles 7 to 21 days after exposure, according to health officials, who should monitor for measles symptoms until June 9. Individuals who have been exposed for more than 21 days (until June 9) without any symptoms are fine. Longer at risk.

Measles is described as a highly contagious virus and an infected person can infect nine out of 10 unvaccinated people in close contact. Infection with the virus can cause serious health problems, including pneumonia, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and death, especially in unvaccinated people.

The Fresno County Department of Public Health says most health insurance covers the cost of the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles (as well as measles and mumps). Anyone who is uninsured or on Medi-Cal can get the MMR vaccine through the Fresno County Department of Public Health. For more information: Click here.
