West Ham United have agreed a deal with Manchester City to sign midfielder Calvin Phillips on loan for the rest of the season.

The 28-year-old Phillips has been loaned out by City, with Juventus exploring a possible deal but no agreement has been reached with the Italian club at this stage.

Personal terms are not expected to be an issue as West Ham cover Phillips’ wages.

The England international is flying to England with the rest of the City squad after completing a warm-weather training camp and will undergo a medical on Thursday.

An option to make the transfer permanent in the summer will be exercised if West Ham agree to meet City’s asking price.

West Ham sold key defensive midfielder Dylan Rice to Arsenal in the summer for £105m, but have strengthened their ranks by signing James Ward Proves from Southampton and Edson Alvarez from Ajax. Fellow midfielder Tomas Sucek, who is out of contract at the end of this season, signed a new deal earlier this year that will keep him until 2027.

Phillips, meanwhile, has fallen short at City and has failed to cement his place in Pep Guardiola’s starting line-up since his move from Leeds United two seasons ago.

City were willing to let Philippe out on loan in the summer but he insisted on staying and fighting for his place. Guardiola failed to convince last season that he could be part of the team and after signing Mateo Kovacic and Mateo Nunes in the summer, this campaign was never going to change that.

Phillips has made 31 appearances for City in all competitions, scoring once.
