Xiaomi’s announcement follows Samsung released its two foldable devices on Wednesday – the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 — If the Mix Fold 2 ever ships to markets outside of China, it will bring some much-needed competition to the foldables market. One way Xiaomi is trying to beat its Korean rivals is by claiming that the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is the “world’s thinnest foldable phone”. At just 5.4mm, it shaves off almost 15 percent of the thickness of the 6.3mm Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4.
It’s not all sunlight and device measurement contests, as Samsung’s flagship offering includes a useful Flex mode (Samsung’s terminology for apps that automatically redirect to fit the folded screen) and IPX8 water resistance, two features the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 lacks. Nevertheless, Xiaomi’s 4,500mAh battery capacity is still slightly larger than the 4,400mAh battery found in Samsung’s Z Fold 4. The Mix Fold 2 also supports 67W wireless fast charging, which the brand claims can be fully charged in 40 minutes. While the Z Fold 4 only supports up to 25W fast charging, Samsung claims the phone can reach 50 percent battery capacity in 30 minutes.
Currently, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is only available for purchase in China, with no announcement as to when the phone will be available in other markets. Pricing for the 256GB base model is set at CNY 8,999 (about US$1,300), which significantly undercuts prices. CNY 13,999 (over US$2,000) Samsung wants the 256GB version of the Z Fold 4 in the country.
If these prices are for international sales, then Samsung can finally they face serious competition for foldersespecially in price-sensitive markets like India, where Xiaomi is number 1 in terms of market share and Samsung is only in fourth place, According to IDC.
