After the seismic impact of Baldur’s Gate 3, a company name you’ve definitely heard of, Larian Studios, has quietly backed one of the best Metroidvania games ever made.

Anyone who has played Blasphemous will admit that its rotating world, ungodly themes and intense side-scrolling action are something special to behold. We can thank the thousands of Kickstarter backers, surprisingly including Larian Studios, for funding developer The Game Kitchen through production of the game in 2017.

“Not many people know this, but Larian Studios was one of the biggest contributors during the Blasphemous Kickstarter campaign,” lead level designer Enrique Colinet revealed in a recent social media post. post. The RPG studio was supposedly “going down.” [four] they never asked for their reward and went on to make one of the best games ever made in recent years.”

I’m not sure how a studio with hundreds of developers would logically share Kickstarter backer rewards, but the sentiment is good either way. (Maybe 400 of them can crowd around a projector and watch the Blasphemous art book?)

This the game Baldur’s Gate 3 recently made history as the first game in history to win Game of the Year at the top five major ceremonies. For reference, this means that the game won Gold Joysticks, BAFTA Game Awards, DICE Awards, Game Developer’s Choice Awards and Game Awards.

Game Kitchen itself isn’t bad either, as the indie outfit released the diabolical sequel to Blasphemous 2 last year. Our Blasphemous 2 review called it unpredictable and disturbing, and that’s not to mention it has the best interconnected map since Dark Souls.

After the unexpected success of Baldur’s Gate 3, the Larian boss said the studio was “good for a few years”.
