AUGUSTA, Ga. – Tiger Woods is 48, 68 on good days, maybe 78 on others. His body is a mess, especially in 2016. The only way to compete on tour these days is to give yourself plenty of time between rounds to recover, ice, rest a bit and try again the next day. It would be tempting fate to avoid any part of that process, possibly leading to a poor round, missed cuts and one tournament left to play in Tiger history.

So how do we explain what happened at the Masters on Friday when Tiger had to play 23 holes in the wind with a 52-minute break between the first five and the last 18?

“It was a long day, a long day, it was a good fight, we were good there,” he said later, looking completely exhausted after the second round, an even 72 that put him one over for the tournament. . “I’m tired. I’ve been out there for a while, competing, grinding. It’s been a long 23 holes, a long day,” he said.

But as only Tiger can, he steered the conversation to his favorite topic: winning. Or at least arguing. over here. this week. Truly.
