Cameron Young 12th different player Saturday at the Travelers Championship to record a sub-60 score on the PGA Tour.

The youngster shot TPC River Highlands to an 11-under 59, a score that tied Young for the lead with Tom Kim, though Kim was still 20 minutes out when Young finished the round.

“He was awake, he’d rather go back to sleep,” Young said. “… I didn’t feel any different. I cut a little less than I did yesterday. Then, yeah, I went out and I was really comfortable and things started going down closer to the hole.”

After getting into the 11th group out Saturday — and 4 hours and 15 minutes before Kim’s final par — Young birdied three of the first four holes. A hole he didn’t birdie during that stretch? On the par-4 third, he holed the hole wedge from 142 yards and eagled it.

Young added a second eagle when he drove a 3-iron to 4 feet 280 yards and made the putt.

“I hit this club all over the place and finally just hit one,” Young said. “I think I said something on the next score, give me all the right momentum. And he did. I mean, that’s where it ends up being a big swing in front of the green. So you know, it’s a great swing and a great strike, but it’s basically a 2 for it to end up.” It is unlikely that you will be able to tap.

“You can hit the same bullet a hundred more times and you’ll get two on that plateau.”

Young’s 59 is the first sub-60 score on tour since Scotty Scheffler shot a 59 at TPC Boston at the 2020 Northern Trust — and 13th overall. He is one shot shy of the record 58 walks set by Jim Furyk in 2016.

Furyk is the only player to score a two-under 60 on Tour, shooting a 59 at the 2013 BMW Championship at Conway Farm.

His 59 won’t be on the list until he catches up to Young’s career accomplishments, said Young, who has seven career first-place finishes, including a sole second at the 2022 St. Andrews Open Championship despite having no wins on Tour.

“I played really good golf,” Young said. “I think there are certain things that are ahead of me in terms of lifetime achievement. It’s one day, one day they shot a million. It’s great and I’m thankful that my name is on that short list, but there are whole tournaments that I’ve played in that maybe I’m the one that probably still puts it above that.
