PHILADELPHIA — This time a year ago, Christopher Sanchez had six big league games in three seasons — all in relief.

Fast forward to Saturday, and the 27-year-old Sanchez sat down with Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski as the club announced a four-year extension for Sanchez that includes team options for 2029 and ’30.

Few saw this coming for Sanchez, who showed up to the press conference wearing an Alec Bohm T-shirt with “I love this place” across his chest.

“As much as we love Christopher,” Dombrowski said, “the same time last year when he first came in — even though we liked a lot about him, I didn’t tell you the truth — I thought. We’re sitting here today and he’s enjoying the success he had last year.”

What he accomplished was truly amazing.

Manager Rob Thomson added: “I’d be lying if I said the truth, it’s been an amazing journey.”

Regardless, they couldn’t be happier right now.

“Christopher has pitched tremendously for us and we project that he will continue to do so,” Dombrowski said. “We are excited to sign one of the best young players in baseball for many years.”

Sanchez in 2010 He had a special breakout year in 2023 when he was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to start somewhere on June 17 — and he never left.

He posted a 3.44 ERA over 19 games (18 starts) to help keep Philadelphia’s rotation going, which had no answer at No. 5. With the club in need of a fourth starter in the National League Championship Series, the lefty pitched in nicely to get the call.

“I’m very happy to be here,” Sanchez said through a team interpreter. “I feel good about this deal and what the future holds.”

Sanchez has taken his game to another level this season.

He has a 2.91 ERA through 14 starts. His sinker is averaging 94.5 mph — up from 92.1 mph last year. His changeup continues to be one of the most dominant pitches in the game, limiting opponents to a .189 average (21-for-111) and producing a 41.5% whiff rate.

So what exactly is his ceiling?

“I didn’t see him get to this point, so I don’t know where he’s going to end up,” Thompson said. “But if we rank his stuff, like his fastball speed, his fastball command is as good as anybody, his changeup is the best on the team.”

The most impressive number for Sanchez is that he has allowed just one home run in 77 1/3 innings this season.

“He works from behind and it’s really bad,” veteran right-hander Aaron Nola said. “So he’s a good guy to hold the bat for a few years.”

“I told him I had to sit down and talk to him about how I couldn’t give up homers,” he joked.

Another key part of the rotation, Ranger Suarez, is set to enter free agency after the 2025 season.

“It’s basically following the leaders with what we’ve built here with the horses of the team: Wheeler, Nola and Ranger,” Sanchez said.

The Phillies would love to make Suarez the leader of the pack when it comes to a long-term deal.

“We really like Ranger and hope he’s a part of the organization for a long time,” Dombrowski said. “I’ve always felt that contract negotiations are something that we’ve kept to ourselves. There’s no reason to be public about them. There’s nothing to gain. But we like to have him in the company for the long haul.”

Dombrowski prefers not to have those discussions during the offseason, though in Sanchez’s case the contract was quickly put together.

His development was a different story.

Thompson still remembers the first time he saw Sanchez pound. He was throwing 98-99 mph, but the ball was “complex.”

“I can’t even imagine that where he’s at right now,” Thompson said. Any order from the super powered man went to another power.

And the Phillies anticipate he will only continue to improve.

“You don’t want anybody to sign a long-term contract and rest,” Dombrowski said. “Well, he’s not. He wants to keep getting better and better and better and become one of the best players in Major League Baseball.

“And we feel very strongly that he can accomplish that.”
