You Shouldn’t Even Bake Your Steam Deck on Thanksgiving Day

Slow news day? You betcha. But look, it’s Thanksgiving and there’s a good chance people are cooking and eating whatever they can find right now. Please, if we can save just one person from trying to cook a Steam Deck, it will be worth it.

As reported Dexerto, a Redditor discovered that the unintended consequence of leaving Valve’s fantastic handheld in a hot oven was causing it to overheat. Still with me? And since it is made of plastic, being hot is not its favorite.

There is something about this picture that tells the whole story magnificently. But if you need more details, MisterColeman wrote on the r/SteamDeck subreddit: “Don’t let your steam deck come into contact with the stove.

On closer inspection, it looks like the internals aren’t overcooked, with the real damage – apart from the body, obviously – being to the two rear right bumpers. Although who knows what tiny wires (I’m no techie) might melt in the process.

Even better, MisterColeman shamelessly went to Steam Deck Support and asked if they could help. In an update, he wrote: “Steam Deck Support said there was no help from them and that the repair would cost more than buying a new Steam Deck. I think it’s just a new battery and back panel. Maybe not even a new battery. We’ll see.”

Come on Valve! What do you think without considering it a design flaw? How would this void the warranty? While I’m sure there is some of them the small print about not heating the device anywhere, I’m pretty sure it didn’t specifically say “Do Not Heat”.

For the avoidance of doubt, here are some other things should not With your Steam Deck:

  • You shouldn’t steam your deck, no matter how much it wants to steam.
  • You should not use Steam Deck as a cover, although it is very much intended.
  • You shouldn’t compare your Steam deck to the Nintendo Switch.
